United States of Vojvodina

[United States of Vojvodina]

"Flag" of United States of Vojvodina - Image by Tomislav Todorović, 4 December 2011

The images of the flag derived from that of the USA, but with only three stars in the canton, arranged 1:2, were making parts of a printout for the T-shirts which were advertised in the magazine Nezavisni during summer 1997. (Another printout advertised at the same time was showing the better-known blue-yellow-green vertical tricolor and the inscription "Vojvodina Resistance Movement".) The printout design consisted of two flying US-style flags in center, the one at the left-hand side shown as the mirror-image of the other one (as expected for the sinster hoisting), inscripition "THE UNITED STATES OF VOJVODINA" beneath the flags in two rows (bottom row containing only the word "VOJVODINA" in larger letter size), words "BAČKA SREM BANAT" inscribed in an arc above the flags, the whole being surrounded with a wreath of flowers which were not easy to recognize, but could be poppies, which frequently grow in the wheat fields and might have been considered a typical flower for the region. The advertisement was printed, like the whole magazine, in black and white, which made it impossible to reconstruct the flag colors for some time. Very few T-shirts with this printed design, if any, were produced (I, personally, never saw one), but the device was reproduced on badges which could be occasionally seen during the next following years, and these were showing the flags in full colors: seven green and six white stripes and three yellow stars on blue canton.
The flags themselves were never seen and seem to have never been made either, which certainly made it easier to withdraw their images from use by the beginning of NATO campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1999; they were not reintroduced afterwards, for their use might cause much problems to the users, considering that Vojvodina was also targeted during the war, with significant damages as the result. Still a few of the remaining badges were spotted on a couple of occasions until 2000, these actually enabling the reconstruction of colors.

Another reason to believe that the such flags were never made is that there were two rather unpopular concepts behind the design: the statehood of Vojvodina, within or outside of Serbia, which was (and still is) rejected by most of people, and further devolution to the level of the Vojvodinian regions, which was (and still is) rejected by most of those who might find the first concept favorable.
Consequently, the flag design was too controversial to gain much acceptance, yet it is possible that the arrangement of stars on this flagoid did partly inspire the unusual arrangement of stars on the current flag of Vojvodina: the three objects arranged 1:2, usually stars, were used as symbols, before, during and after period of the flagoid's use, in the propaganda of regional political movements which supported the adoption of a flag for Vojvodina and mostly contributed to its eventual adoption with the current design.

Tomislav Todorović, 4 December 2011
